Experts Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, authors of The Power of Full Engagement, write that when we work ceaselessly without taking time to rest and renew our energies, we are on a path to burnout: "To maintain a powerful pulse in our lives, we must learn how to rhythmically spend and renew energy. The richest,
happiest and most productive lives are characterized by the ability to fully engage in the challenge at hand, but also to disengage periodically and seek renewal." |
| Reflect _______________
So many of us are rushing from place to place, determined to get where we are going on time, conscious of the
need to be well-organized and prepared for whatever the day holds. We are multi-taskers, talking on the phone, even as we drop off the dry-cleaning or walk our children to school. We gulp our coffee as we dial up on the conference call. We eat at our desks, often working straight through the lunch break, in order to save time and meet our deadlines. We take no time pause during the day for a short break or even to eat lunch, and, despite good intentions and guilty
awareness of the need for more "balance," busy people often set their personal goals, family time, and health aside in order to meet the demands of work.
As you think about the change that you'd like to see in your life, begin by pausing twice a day for ten to fifteen minutes and allowing yourself time for reflection and renewal of energy.
We've provided some simple practices, ideas, and resources to help you begin.
