Case Study: Organizations
When the executive team of a large non-profit received a mandate to look into the future and develop a vision of the organization in ten years, the Chief Operating Officer called Nebo. We designed a unique 2.5 day vision retreat experience in beautiful Sperryville, Virginia, just 90 minutes outside of Washington, D.C., but worlds away from the daily commitments of participants.
The team first developed a shared story of the organization’s history and present situation to prepare for the vision work. This process helped everyone to see the same picture and identify “what to keep” and "what to let go" as they looked to the future. Then, working together on the front porch of the Hopkins Ordinary, a historic 190-year old inn, they created an exciting vision of the future that addressed the changing needs of their membership, the design of the organization and the role of technology in the organization. The group took it one step further and worked with a local potter to make a personal symbol to remind them of their own visions of self-as-leader.
This experience included dining al fresco, time for rest and reflection and plenty of fresh lemonade to get the creative juices flowing.
The group moved from the vision retreat into setting goals and beginning a strategic planning process to make their vision real. Their vision is in the process of being realized today as they implement their strategic plan.
