Leading for Sustainability
“The human race is challenged more than ever before to demonstrate our mastery - not over nature but of ourselves”
- Rachel Carson
Looking ahead...
At Nebo, we study leadership through our work with individuals, teams and organizations every day. We learn continually how the future is created through our Vision Lab process, which calls forth the power of imagination. As observers of people and organizational life, we see the juxtaposition of human thinking and behavior upon the natural systems of the earth. Too often, we see that people are moving forward with a sense of scarcity, fear, and even doom about the sustainability of our race on this planet. Newspapers and other media tell us that we are heading towards disaster, and yet we are unsure of how to affect this frightening situation.
We are the leaders we've been waiting for.
The time is now for each one of us to step forward as leaders, ready to make new moves, learn new ways and enlist others in balancing our relationship with Nature and her resources. Here at Nebo, we say simply, "there is another way."
We believe that within each man, woman and child is a visionary leader -- and we believe in the power of one person to make a difference. Whether or not you hold a prominent position in a high-powered organization, we invite you to see yourself as a leader, a leader who can help to establish another way of living and working.
Establishing an intention to support sustainability
The starting point for each of us is accepting that this problem must be solved by all of us, acting solo and together -- not just our governments and institutions. We are eager to bring our visioning work and leadership development services to communities, schools and other groups who want to be part of shifting to another way.
Becoming personally "sustainable"
Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the leaders whose work inspire us, explains that to create a harmonious and peaceful world, we must start with peace within. Similarly, we see that a sustainable way of living requires personal sustainability. Leaders everywhere are depleted and "burned out" by the ongoing demands of work. Parents struggle to make time for children and home. People skip meals, sleep poorly and travel constantly, expecting themselves to deliver top quality work despite their exhaustion.
Every Nebo coaching engagement includes an assessment of personal sustainability. We help you take a step back and review your well-being and relationships with others and the world.
