Discover _______________________________

"I know myself very well so nothing you say will surprise me," said one senior executive in his first coaching session.  As the conversation continued in the hour and months that followed, our coach learned that this client did indeed know himself well. He could list his priorities and the traits that he viewed as strengths and weaknesses.  He was aware of  some habits that were holding him back at work and in his personal relationships. He had some understanding of how his colleagues and those who reported to him viewed his leadership thanks to feedback that he learned from a recent 360 degree review.  The coach observed early on, however, that while the client was well informed and introspective, he had not yet put this self-awareness to practical use.  In truth, there was much left for the client to discover about himself and how his values, beliefs, emotions and priorities shaped his reality.

A coach helps the client to shift, to move from confusion to clarity, from being reactive to purposeful action, from volatility to centered calm and to a greater understanding of how his behavior and approach to leadership affects the productivity, performance and morale of his team.  With a high level of self-awareness and knowledge of how to find and use the best within himself, a leader can take the organization to new levels of achievements.

Discovery is the first stage of the coaching process.  During this stage, the client and coach will discover key information about how the client learns, how he or she is motivated, and about habits and beliefs that support or interfere with the ability to make the changes that the client wants to see. The discovery stage is the foundation for practices and shifts that will occur later in the coaching process, and coaches use many tools, models and questions to help the client uncover important insights.

Would you like to begin self-discovery at a deeper level?
